CV - Potatoes with...

Corner View is a weekly appointment - each Wednesday - created by Jane and currently curated by Francesca, where bloggers from all corners of the world share their view on a pre-arranged theme. If you'd like to join in, please leave a link to your Corner View post in the comments at www.fuoriborgo.com, and be sure to visit other participants, too.

One of my favorite stanzas from Seamus Heaney's poem, "Digging":

The cold smell of potato mould, the squelch and slap
Of soggy peat,  the curt cuts of an edge
Through the living roots awaken in my head.
But I've no spade to follow men like them.

I had the pleasure of hearing him read this poem (and several others) to my class in  1988. I got to meet him at the meet and greet afterward, but was too "cool" to ask him to sign my book.  If only I could go back in time... I would have asked for his autograph and gotten a photograph with him.  Sigh.

  2. not sure i understand the poem (I never do), but i'm impressed that potatoes (cold! potato! mould!) inspired a poet. :)

  4. I've never eaten sweet potatoes, but heard many good things. I must absolutely try.

  5. That poem reminds me how much of my family history is tied to the potato. My family left Ireland after the crops of potaoes failed.
